Cavs Sweep Macoupin Meet
By Chad Baalman
CARLINVILLE -- The Carlinville Cavaliers covered the county in double time on their home track Thursday.
Carlinville won the boys and girls championships in the annual Macoupin County Track Meet on the Cavs' new all-weather surface.
The Cavaliers scored 108 points for the boys team title. Virden was second with 48 points and Gillespie was third with 47 points. Mount Olive (31 points), Staunton (29 points), Girard (21 points) and Southwestern (16 points) rounded out the team scoring.
On the girls side, Carlinville edged Gillespie 89-86 for the team title. Southwestern was third with 36 points, followed by Virden, fourth with 30 points. Girard (28 points), Mount Olive (16 points) and Staunton (two points) completed the girls scoring.
"It doesn't get any better than that -- when the final event determines the team championship," Carlinville coach Dave Jokisch said.
Carlinville finished second to Virden in the last event, the 4x400 relay. Gillespie came in fifth.
The Miners got an outstanding effort from Kristine Polo. She won the long jump (15-5 3/4), the 100-meters (12.8) and the 200 (26.9).
Teammate Margo Girardi was first in the 100 hurdles (16.5) and the 300 hurdles (47.5). Her time in the latter event was a county record. Amber Lewis of Gillespie won the triple jump (34-4).
Genice Stierwalt of Carlinville won the 400 in a record 1:01 and teammate Rebecca Bryan was first in the 3,200 at 12:05. The Cavaliers also produced victories in the 4x100 relay (53.3) and the 4x800 realy (10:30).
Southwestern's Kelly Gable doubled her fun with wins in the 800 (2:27.4) and the 1,600 (5:39.3). The first one was a county record.
As expected Tunde Ridley paced the Carlinville boys. He won the triple jump (46-8), the 100 (10.7) and 200 (21.6). All three were county marks. Ridley, however, scratched in the long jump and teammate Amit Chopra finished first (20-11).
"I was really pumped up for the rest of the events after
scratching in the long jump," Ridley said.
