Senior Babatunde Ridley knew that if his Carlinville team was to win the Class A boys state track title Saturday, everyone had to do his part.
That may be the understatement of the decade.
Ridley scored 40 of his team's 46 points and pulled off one of the most astounding performances at the boys meet as Carlinville cruised to the small-school title.
He won the 100, 200 and triple jump and set a Class A state record in winning the long-jump crown. By winning four individual golds, Ridley matched the mark set by Luther South graduate and 1992 Olympic gold medalist Mike Conley.
"After I finished the 200, I wanted to do a cartwheel or something," said the Illinois-bound Ridley. "But I kept it under control.
"But we're a team. We all had to do our part. I just did my part."
"That's a part of his personality," said Carlinville coach Dave Jokisch, whose team bill bring home the first state championship trophy in the school's history. "He doesn't want to be the whole show. But the last time I saw something like this was in 1981, when I saw Mike [Conley]. This was just as awesome."
Carlinville easily outdistanced Rushville (31 points), while Luther South finished third with 27.5. . . .
