Here, only 7 respondents are involved for illustration. Column A shows the respondent numbers. Column B shows the number of people each respondent claims to know in the unknown-size population. The unknown-size population is called m in the back-estimation formula. Columns C, D, E, and F are the number of people the respondent claims to know in each of the known-size populations. Thus, cells C2-C8 are the number of people the respondent claims to know in the first known-size population; cells D2-D8 are the number of people the respondent claims to know in the second known-size population; and so on. Row 9 shows the total number of people reported to be known by all respondents in the unknown-size and known-size populations. Cell B9 is the total number reported known, across all respondents, in the unknown-size population. Cells C9-F9 are the total number reported known, across all respondents, in the known-size populations. Column G is the sum of people the respondent reports knowing in all the known-size populations. Thus, cell G2=the sum of C2-F2; cell G3 is the sum of C3-F3; and so on. Cell I2 is the number of people in the total population (the city or country within which the known-size and the unknown-size populations are embedded). Cells J2-M2 are the statistics (the actual sizes) for the known-size populations. Cell N2 is the sum of the statistics for the known-size populations. Column H is the scale-up estimate of c (the total size of the individual social network) for each respondent. It is G2(I2)/N2. These data give us what we need to estimate the size of the unknown-size population. First, add the numbers in column H to get the sum of c (network size) across the respondents in the study (shown in H9). Second, divide the sum of c by the number of respondents (in this case, 7) to get the average c (shown in A26). Third, total the number of number of people the respondents claim to know in the unknown-size population (shown in B9). Fourth, divide this total by the number of respondents (here, 7). This gives us the average number of people in the unknown population that respondents claim to know (shown in B10). Finally, divide this number by the average network size (shown in A26) and multiply the result by the total population (I2). The result is shown in cell C29. Note that the number in C29 is slightly different from the number you will get if you follow the directions here and do the calculation by hand. This is because the numbers in column H and in cell A26 are rounded to one decimal place. The calculation done by this Excel sheet is based on the exact numbers in all of the cells. < џH.
