C12    Identify five general factors which should be considered in the selection of amalgam alloys.

1. The selected amalgam alloy should be ADA approved
2. The amalgam should be a high copper amalgam
3. The handling characteristics should fit the operator. A slow operator should not use a fast setting amalgam.
4. The capsule system should be safe (no leakage of mercury during trituration).

The ADA approval means that the dental amalgam alloys fulfill certain minimal requirements and that the manufacturer has a certain quality control.

The high copper amalgam will have a lower marginal fracture tendency

What is good for one operator may not be suitable for another. It is very important to find an amalgam that fits the user.

During trituration, mercury droplets can be released from the capsules. If this happens, the dentist and his/her personnel may become mercury intoxicated over time.

If the above properties are fulfilled, the price should be considered.
