B10    Discuss the drawbacks and advantages with glass ionomer bases compared with calcium hydroxide bases.

Drawback

Glass ionomers are more irritating to the pulp than calcium hydroxide liners (bases). The latter stimulate reparative dentin formation more efficiently.

Advantages

Glass ionomers are stronger and bond to both dentin and enamel. The higher modulus of elasticity of a glass ionomer makes it more suitable for use if thermal protection is needed. Glass ionomers also release some fluoride.
