Advantage

A varnish protect the dentin from acid exposure from the cement.

Drawback

The cement retention decreases. The reason is that the varnish will smoothen the surface and prevent the cement crystals to grow into surface roughness when it sets. In addition, the use of a varnish means that one more material (the varnish) is used, which will increase the time of the treatment procedure.
