The size of the pulp decreases with age. The decreased size also decreases the blood supply to the pulp chamber. Decreased blood supply decreases the defensive ability of the pulp. Consequently, a pulp irritation that does not cause any harm on a younger patient may have a more serious effect on an older patient.
