F14.
Briefly describe the requirements for sealants to be successfully used in the
oral cavity including physical properties, clinical requirements, and physical
and chemical characteristics.
The sealant should be tough and wear resistant, minimal polymerization
shrinkage, and low surface energy. In addition, the sealant should not discolor
over time and be easy to place without incorporation of air bubbles. The sealant
should also be stable in oral fluids and last, but not least important, be safe
to the patient over time.
