NERDC TELEPROCESSING NERDC installs and maintains telecommunications hardware and software. Assistance is provided to users in selecting and using interactive workstations, remote batch terminals and local area networks. In addition, the NERDC provides networking services, standard guidelines, consulting and management resources to support and facilitate user access to local area networks, the SUS computer networks such as FIRN, and national networks such as BITNET, NSF Internet and related resources. Technical consulting, acquisition evaluation, communication configurations, protocol conversion, file sharing, and facilities management are also provided to support distributed data processing. The NERDC operates a network which includes SNA and Ethernet and Token Ring. While a majority of the devices are located at the University of Florida (UF), many others are spread statewide. NERDC provides protocol conversion services to users of the FIRN SNA, TYMnet and FIRNIP networks. The NERDC is attached to several other networks. Within the state this includes the SUS network and FIRN. On a national and international basis this includes BITNET, SURAnet, and Internet. NERDC provides support to the Alachua Free-Net, FIRN and DivCom (Flites and RTS) the Division of Housing in the design and implementation of its campus-wide network, and the Florida Center for Library Automation in the design of its state-wide network. NERDC has provided Ufnet connectivity to PK Young, ICHP, UF Foundation, Alachua County Government and the Alachua County District Library Headquarters. NERDC Duties and Responsibilities for UF Networking: The duties and responsibilities of the NERDC staff designated to support UF digital network are categorized and described below. >SURAnet/Internet Point of Presence for UFNET users NERDC manages and maintains the Internet Point of Presence (POP) for all UFNET users. This includes providing planning support for future upgrades and acquisitions (OITS will provide and own the router and pay the SURAnet fees directly). >Campus Token Ring Network Management NERDC manages and maintains the UF Token Ring Backbone component of UFNET which is currently connected to seven sites, primarily for administrative use. >FIRN Gateway Services NERDC manages and maintains the FIRN gateway and will upgrade this gateway when resources permit by funding from FIRN or UF. >Domain Administration NERDC manages and maintains the UFL.EDU domain space. >Campus-Wide Slip/PPP Modem Pool NERDC is in the process od establishing a modem pool with 64 lines for UF student access to the Internet.
