led to the Dental Practice-Based
Research Network.

The FDCS received grant support from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
We used data from the 1990 U.S. Census Bureau to compare characteristics of persons in the four counties of interest to those who participated in the FDCS. This had to be arranged with the Bureau directly, because we needed ZIP-code specific information. Consequently, we purchased data from the Bureau which they generated specifically for this project. The Bureau was willing to do this because we were a contractor for NIDCR at the time.
We used data from the 1989 U.S. National Health Interview Survey from the National Center for Health Statistics to compare dental care use nationally with dental care use of persons in the FDCS. These data are available to the public by purchasing them on a CD-ROM. However, to analyze them adequately, one needs SUDAAN statistical software to account for the complex sampling design.
