Participants in the Florida Dental Care Study met these criteria as of their screening interview in 1993:

• had at least one natural tooth;
• lived in either Duval, Hamilton, Jefferson, or Madison counties;
• if lived in Duval county, lived in one of 21 specific ZIP codes;
• had a telephone in their household;
• 45 years old or older;
• did not live in an institutional setting such as a nursing home, military installation, or correctional facility;
• English-speaking;
• either non-Hispanic Black or non-Hispanic White;
• capable of engaging in a coherent telephone conversation.
