Classroom Application                                                                            See also  Selected Links for Teachers

'Links for Academic Writing' can be used by teachers as well as individual students. All of the files in the 'Links for Academic Writing' are handouts which can be printed directly from the internet, copied, and then used in the classroom. In addition to following the given order, two other methods of using these handouts can be used.

1)    Recommended Use of This Page:

It is highly recommended to have students use this page along with writing activities (essay, report, etc.) so that students can use techniques they have just learned from handouts. The model used in this page is Bottom-Up. Students will learn formula first and use it to write essay or paper. Each section can be used for each classroom period.

Step1 (a task to read handouts) and Step2 ( a task to do quiz) can be assigned to students as preclass activities. Step1 can be assigned as a written report and can be collected in classroom or through e-mail.

A simple quiz can be given to students in classroom to make sure they have done preclass activities. Note that extra quizzes can be found in handouts. See Interactive Quiz for more information.

2)     Use handouts from a single section;

such as 'sentence',  'paragraph' , and so forth. This usage is efficient because specific deficiencies in students' academic writing can be targeted. The following table is the list of sections.

Getting started Outline Introduction Sentence
Paragraph Conclusion Editing Grammar

3)     Use handouts from one certain institution

For example, you might like the handouts from Purdue the best and pick out only those. All of the topics are labeled with the institution which wrote the information. The following are the recommended institutions.

  • Writing Center (Harvard University)

  • Individual Practice for Your Students . . . Interactive Individual Quizzes Over the Internet

    Internet quizzes can be taken by each student outside of the classroom as a preparation for class. Using the internet quizzes allows your students to gain practice with topics which often can not be covered in the classroom due to time constraints. The following links lead to the most useful quizzes. There are enough quizzes on every topic that you may never run out. These quizzes are very user friendly.
