To compute the date of Mardi Gras, count 40 days (excluding Sundays) prior to the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, i.e., 40 days prior to Easter, or the day before Ash Wednesday.
The day can fall any Tuesday between February 3 and March 9. Carnival celebration starts on January 6, the Twelfth Night (the feast of Epiphany).
