We were fortunate to have had such outstanding rural and urban Project Coordinators, who are listed on the "FDCS investigators and staff" page. They always treated all the FDCS participants with the utmost respect, and were thorough and persistent when keeping track of each participant's whereabouts.
Each year of the study, we sent a birthday card and holiday season card to each participant.

At the baseline, 24-month, and 48-month sessions, we gave each participant a FDCS coffee cup and canned ham. For the 72-month session, we also gave a FDCS coffee cup, but we could not provide a canned ham; consequently, we increased the cash payment to participants for the clinical examination visit. For the 24-month session, participants were paid $20, and for the 48-month session, they were paid $25. For the 72-month session, participants were paid $35. We realized that this did not adequately compensate participants for their time, but it did at least let them know that we were grateful.
